How New Mexico Will Regulate Natural Medicine
In April 2025, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham signed the Medical Psilocybin Act (SB 219) into law, making New Mexico the third state in the country to create a legal pathway to natual medicine treatment. The Act took effect June 20, 2025 and tasks the New Mexico Department of Health (DOH) with implementing a regulated medical program.1
Unlike Colorado's broader access model, New Mexico's program is explicitly medical, with treatment limited to four qualifying conditions:
• Major treatment-resistant depression
• Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
• Substance use disorders
• End-of-life care2
DOH officials have set a goal to begin treating initial patients by the end of December 2026, with full program implementation required no later than December 31, 2027.
What We Know About
Facilitator Training (So Far)
The Medical Psilocybin Advisory Board's Training and Education Committee has signaled the direction of future training rules. Current recommendations to the Secretary of Health include:
Aligned with NM medical model.
Deeper emphasis on clinical screening, risk assessment, integration with the medical system, and the specific qualifying conditions named in the Act.
Honors New Mexico's cultural landscape.
Built in consultation with indigenous lineage carriers and respectful of the state's tribal communities, in alignment with the State-Tribal Collaboration Act.
Same dual-domain faculty model.
Clinical experts alongside wisdom keepers — the AIS signature.
Built for the rules as written, not as guessed.
We will not publish a final New Mexico curriculum until DOH publishes final training standards.
